My artwork is always growing and changing, and I doubt I will ever settle into creating one specific style. I focus on how I perceive the world as a modern bisexual woman while conveying the toll that sexism, homophobia, and mental illness take on my life. I mainly work in acrylic paint, and pencil crayon, although I often enjoy experimenting in sculptural mediums as well. When painting, I create thin colourful glazes that create an effect similar to oil paints. I find that realism creates an attention grabbing piece, and I love making things that stand out. My art is often very vivid and colourful, in my attempt make our world seem less bland. In the future I hope to explore the negative effects of capitalism on our modern society.
ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
My name is Jessica Thomas, I go by the name JES artistically. I was born in Kitchener, Ontario, and have lived all over Ontario, and well as in Alberta. I am currently attending OCAD University and living in Toronto. I began practicing artistically when I was 13 as a way to cope with an unstable home life. I have experienced the effects of substance abuse, religious trauma, and severe mental illness in all of my family members. I have three younger sisters, all of us who have been diagnosed with severe anxiety and depression disorders. My artistic practice is how I perceive the world around me, from issues pertaining to modern sexism, to mental illness and substance abuse.
