This work was a photography project before becoming the poster for my short film "The Hermit", which follows a man who has taken to the woods to live a simple life devoted to an Epicurean notion of pleasure. The image--a self-portrait with a beard made of sheep's wool, dried flowers, and dead insects--explores the gendered performance of wisdom and insight and, in its formal references, attempts to strike a balance between melodramatic romanticism and twinkle-in-the-eye humour.
